New Study Shows Promise for Iron Deficiency in Children with Syrup Supplement

Iron deficiency is the most widespread nutritional deficiency globally, impacting millions of children, particularly in developing regions or among those on plant-based diets in developed countries. A new study from Slovenia has highlighted the potential of PharmaLinea’s Your Iron Syrup as an effective, well-tolerated solution for addressing iron deficiency in children.

Iron Deficiency: A Growing Concern

Iron deficiency, whether or not it leads to anemia, affects around 2 billion people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), children are particularly vulnerable, with about 42% of them suffering from iron deficiency globally. In the U.S., nearly 3% of toddlers are affected by iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), while in Europe, the numbers are higher, with as many as 50% of children in Eastern Europe experiencing IDA.

The new study, a collaboration between the University Children’s Hospital and University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, focused on iron-deficient children aged 9 months to 6 years who were otherwise healthy. The trial tested the efficacy of Your Iron Syrup against a placebo, with promising results.

Clinical Trial Results: A Significant Improvement

The study involved 94 children from 10 pediatric care centers across Slovenia, who were given either the iron syrup or a placebo over a 12-week period. The children who received the syrup showed significant improvements in their iron levels, particularly in ferritin and hemoglobin (Hb) levels, compared to those on the placebo. In fact, 55% of the children taking the iron syrup saw their ferritin levels rise by more than 20 µg/L.

While there were some adverse events (AEs) reported by both groups, the majority were mild and related to common pediatric illnesses, such as gastrointestinal disturbances. The study noted that 83% of the AEs in the supplement group were mild, with very few linked directly to the iron syrup itself.

The Effectiveness of Your Iron Syrup

The study’s results were particularly encouraging. After 12 weeks of supplementation, children who received the iron syrup showed marked improvements in key blood parameters, including a 69% increase in ferritin levels—from 14.5 μg/L (a level at risk for anemia) to 24.5 μg/L (a healthy range). This breakthrough offers a clinically proven solution for children suffering from iron deficiency, helping to prevent anemia without the side effects typically associated with iron medications.

According to Matevž Ambrožič, marketing director at PharmaLinea, these findings are a significant achievement, as it is rare for private-label companies to invest in their own rigorous clinical trials. He emphasizes that Your Iron Syrup offers a safer and more effective alternative for children who need iron supplementation.

Conclusion

Iron deficiency in children is a widespread problem with serious long-term health implications. The new clinical trial shows that Your Iron Syrup can provide a safe and effective solution for improving iron status in children at risk of deficiency, potentially preventing anemia without the harsh side effects of traditional iron treatments. This study marks an important step forward in the fight against iron deficiency in children, providing hope for better health outcomes worldwide.
